What’s the story behind Cheech and Chong’s Bud Farm?
The game starts off with an storyline intro of Cheech and Chong hitchhiking like they do and being picked up by Charlie Manson type character in a van. The Comedy starts right away and they luckily get dropped off in their old neighborhood. They see that their old stomping grounds has fallen on hard times and decide to go into the weed business by taking over their neighbors flower shop. If you’re a fan of the Cheech and Chong movies from the 80’s you’ll recognize a lot of the characters in the game from the films. The uptight piano teacher flower loving neighbor is from “Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie”. Same goes for their bass playing cookie loving friend Curtis who was part of their band in “Up in Smoke”. Even longtime nemesis Sgt. Stadanko is in the game and is set on upsetting whatever Cheech and Chong have growing.
What’s the gameplay like in Cheech and Chong’s Bud Farm?
Cheech & Chong are investing in their dying neighborhood with the booming business of cannabis. They first take up shop in their neighbors flower store, they can take over a record store, church, a health clinic, and a beauty parlor, each of which has a character who can run the business for the duo once their character is unlocked. As the businesses generate resources Cheech and Chong need to invest in attracting customers. Once enough resources have been harvested and the character or business requirements have been met, collecting resources can be automated. As resources are harvested there is a chance for drops of character and business cards which can be used to upgrade then to earn more money, buds, and resources faster. As Cheech and Chong attract more customers and their businesses grow so does the opportunity to gain a bonus by trimming buds. This event happens at the end of each episode. At the end of every episode the days businesses reset back to zero. The character levels and business levels are all retained.
Cheech & Chong‘s Bud Farm has special events which run for a set period of time. During these special events an alternative storyline is available. In the current event the storyline takes place around a “let’s make a deal“ type gameshow where Cheech & Chong are competing for fantastic prizes. If a player competes in these events they will be rewarded for their efforts depending on their rank on the leaderboard. Players can track their progress on the leaderboard to see their potential payout. These events reward bonuses in buds and cards are substantial so it could be worthwhile to take part in them when the opportunity arises.
What are the Microtransactions in Cheech and Chong’s Bud Farm?
There are several microtransactions available from $1.99 up to $99.99 for Diamonds. As I’ve been playing the game I haven’t felt the need to purchase additional Diamonds via the in game store which is conveniently located on the bottom right of the screen. There are also special limited time offers for bonus diamonds and character packs. Free diamonds can be earned by taking part in advertiser offers, however, additional purchases and actions might be necessary. There are special free crates and boxes available daily and by completing goals in the episode.
I like the artwork of Cheech and Chong‘s BudFarm which is done in a colorful cartoon style. The soundtrack that plays in the background is a groovy funky jam that fits Cheech and Chong. The dialogue between Cheech and Chong and the characters in the game is entertaining and hilarious. It’s fun to see the continued interaction outside of the movies. I like that you don’t have to be logged on in the game to collect your buds, they will be accumulating and will be available to collect once you re-launch the game again. There’s also an opportunity to double your yield by watching a paid ad. Overall, as a lifelong Cheech and Chong fan, I’ve always wanted a game centered around my favorite stoner duo! The farming genre is a perfect fit and I fell that this is a great game that all of the Cheech & Chong fans out there will enjoy!
Anyone who’s recently watched the great Apatow comedy doc, George Carlin’s American Dream, noted the prominent appearance of Cheech and Chong as the doc hit the smoky 70s. At their peak, Cheech Marin had passed Carlin so far in popularity that he declared Carlin obsolete – saying “He’s out there talking about peas, man.”
