If you’re playing No Man’s Sky and loving the latest updates like I am, there’s a lot of new features that you might not be aware of! For instance, did you know that you can have an additional companion pet that is a re-purposed Sentinel Droid? Did you also know you can upgrade your Minotaur to have a new Sentinel mech look too? Well, you can and It’s all part of “The Trace of Metal” mission and this is how you trigger the event.
Make a settlement in No Man’s Sky
First you must start a settlement. If you’re having problems starting the settlement mission, go to the planetary chart vendor aboard your local space station and purchase a settlement map. That will activate a settlement on the planet in your system. Once you get your settlement up and running which can take some time if you haven’t done so already. It can take about 48 hours to complete an entire settlement, but they are a ways, some might consider them cheats, but they can help speed up the game world clock, but I’ll leave that for you to google yourself.
Once your settlement is completely built, the event should trigger, which is an invasion by a small sentinel squad into your settlement. However, if you still haven’t triggered the event go into space and hyperspace jump to a few different systems. It took me two system jumps to activate the mission, but I’ve seen it reported that it could take as many as five jumps. Eventually you’ll get a telecommunication call from your settlement saying that they are under attack by sentinels.
Loot Sentinel Canisters to find the Sentinel Chassis
Once you land back at your settlement, I recommend using the teleporter aboard the nearest space station to save time, and you defeat the sentinels, loot the dropped canisters. You’re looking for the discarded sentinel chassis. You’ll know when you find it because an information pop up should appear. This is the next step in the personal sentinel mission.
It is not a long mission, it takes about 30 minutes to complete. Once you have the chassis you are instructed to take it aboard the space anomaly and present it to the NPC Tethys. He will ask you to get different components from NPC‘s around the space anomaly like The teleporter guardian, Mercury, as well as some other familiar NPCs, like Gemini and Hesperus, just follow the missions icons to the next target. The dialogue in the mission is entertaining and gives a little more insight into the sentinel mystery. When you have collected all of the needed components Tethys will put it together for you and tell you to leave the space anomaly because even though you have an open mind, most of the NPC‘s on the anomaly do not like the sentinels and want nothing to do with them.
When you get back to your planet you will have a Sentinel flare in your inventory. When you activate this flare the sentinel droid will present himself to you. when you first interact with the droid it will start you on a new series of missions to upgrade your Minotaur mech.
Interact with your sentinel droid companion to begin the Minotaur customization mission
This mission will have you flying to different locations on the planet and take on various waves of sentinels. As you take on and defeat these waves of enemies you will unlock different components for your Minotaur, like the left arm, right leg etc. Once you defeat the final wave of sentinels and interact with the Sentinel pillar, you’ll be given the final component to update your Mech to its new Mega version. The upgrade changes the color of your Minotaur to blue and resembles the new sentinel mechs we go up against in the latest Sentinel update. Changing to the sentinel version of the Minotaur also changes the interior of the cockpit and gives it a much more robust feeling.
Now with your Sentinel Minotaur, your personal refurbished droid, and four-legged robotic companion from the last expedition, you can explore planet side with your own little droid squad! I hope you enjoy this walk-through and keep having awesome adventures!
