If you have been one of the lucky few who have managed to secure a PS5, we would wager that one of the most exciting things you have been dying to do since you grabbed the much sought after console, is play last generations titles. This is because a lot of these games have received major upgrades on the PS5, with games like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Watchdogs Legion, Fifa 21 and many others getting a facelift.
However, thanks to a major error with the PS5 interface, it is completely possible that you are playing the PS4 version of the game. Thanks to the commendable backwards compatibility feature of the PS5, you’ll have access to a wide variety of older titles provided you owned them last generation. The problem is that if you download a game that has both a PS4 and PS5 version, the PS5 will download the PS4 version by default at the time of writing.
How Do I Fix This?
So now that you know how you’ve been duped by your new console, you may be wondering how to right the situation. Well, when you enter the game library and hover over your desired game, instead of simply pressing X and selecting download, you’ll need to select the icon that looks like a vertical ellipsis and this ill give you the ability to swap the versions around.
So you would think that if you did this, you’d be guaranteed to have access to the PS5 version. Well, think again. If you start the game and then return to it later, there is a chance that the PS5 interface will launch the PS4 version of this game by default for no real reason. This was an issue that was reported during pre-release testing and seems to be linked to automatic upgrades for these titles, so it seems that Sony was aware of these drawbacks but unwilling to fix the issue ahead of launch.
A Laundry List of Issues
This is not the only problem that has been reported by PS5 owners either. It seems that the system has been subject to overheating, hard crashes, performance drops, unprompted shutdowns and database corruptions just to name a few common issues. It’s shocking to see so many users report problems with their console right out of the gate and really serves as a disappointing beginning to next-gen gaming for those who have been unlucky enough to succumb to these issues.
Sony has reportedly asked players to perform factory resets on their devices and urged users to use their customer service if further issues persist but in truth, its a worrying beginning to the PS5’s reign. Here is what Twitter had to say:
