“My name is Ismael.” If you don’t know that famous opening line from the classic wailing tail ‘Moby Dick’ you probably should read more or at least watch more classic movies, it’s a good story! I thought about that book a lot during this expedition because, at times, I felt like I was going crazy just like Captain Ahab himself trying to chase down this leviathan. Space explorers can take on the latest expedition in No Man’s Sky to catch the leviathan, an organic whale sized creature of mythical legend said to be roaming the depths of space. once this space whale is captured, the Leviathan can be added to the players fleet to be sent out on freighter missions.
“This has been the most challenging and frustrating expedition I have participated in.“
This has been the most challenging and frustrating expedition I have participated in. This expedition is a unique one for a few reasons. First, this expedition doesn’t come on the heels of a larger update. No man’s sky has been consistently updated over the past year with tremendous additions to gameplay, graphics, spaceships, and storylines. This is its first complete standalone expedition. Secondly, this expedition is set to “permanent death”. This is a setting in no man’s sky that doesn’t allow the player to respawn in game and resets the players character to its beginning stage after they die.
Although frustrating, challenging, and never convenient, dying is an integral part of this expedition. Players are trying to recover lost memories and, in order to do so, have to work closely with the space anomaly NPC Polo. Players have to assist Polo in closing the “loop” by gathering 3 different items during their adventure. Polo will require liquid sun, ancestral memories, and Soma dust. These three items can be gathered easily enough during the expedition travels, and I recommend following my advice to help save on time and backtracking. I also recommend skipping around the milestones, when possible, in order to consolidate time and save frustration and resources.
As I mentioned before this is a permanent death save file, players will have to be extremely cautious when taking on enemies or even traveling the terrain, as I unfortunately found out, a high enough of a fall will kill you instantly. Thankfully, for me, this happened very early on in my adventures and completed one of my first milestones for me. In order to get the “hermetic seal” recipe without spending any of your resources players can collect it as a milestone reward. This is needed to craft the liquid sun attachment.
Rewards for Expedition VII “Leviathan” are:
- A baby calf Leviathan model to be displayed in bases.
- A Leviathan organic freighter for the players fleet
- A whale seekers cloak
- Special exhaust trail for the players spaceship
- Assortment of expedition themed posters for base decoration
Expedition VII: Phase 1
During this 1st milestone players will have to do the usual in locating and repairing their starship. I advise players to take a death early in order to get the hermetic seal which is needed to create the liquid sun tool attachment for the multi tool. Polo requires 200 liquid sun so players can knock out a lot of this phase within the first few minutes. Players should keep in mind that if they die they will have to repeat this beginning phase again. I advise keeping some liquid sun in your inventory because it’s needed to craft expedition specific materials later.
Expedition VII: Phase 2
During this next phase players should travel to the local space station and speak to all of the aliens aboard to learn three different alien languages. This will unlock that milestone.
The next step is to find an infested world and build a home there, that will complete another milestone.
Next, players should look for a an aggressive animal and feed it creature pellets in order to adopt them as a companion to get another one of the milestone goals out of the way. Players should continue to feed creatures and instead of harvesting milk or honey, harvest the ancestral memories. Polo needs these for his research. Players should also keep some in their inventory, they’ll be needed later to craft the “whale whistle”
Finding a crashed freighter was a lot harder than I had anticipated and actually took the most time for me. I eventually found one by using a “signal booster” to locate the communication terminal which happened to be near a crash site. I advise using the signal booster over buying Maps from the vendor because it saves time and traveling back-and-forth and in looking for encrypted data to exchange for specific maps.
Expedition VII: Phase 3
Players should be able to gather the 10 whispering eggs from the infested planet but I advise players to do so once they have built up their characters resilience a little more.
players need to wait for a storm so they can collect storm crystals. Players should try to keep their Minotaur or spaceship close by in case the storm is too strong. Burrowing under the ground and traveling that way is also a good option to getting around during hazardous storms.
Selling the whispering eggs and the storm crystals aboard the space station should earn the player enough credits to unlock another reward.
Expedition VII: Phase 4
When’s players have enough credits they should be on the right path to come in across an outlaw station. Players should visit the item vendor and purchase illegal goods with all of the credits they earned. Player should take these items directly to a neutral space zone and sell them to unlock the smuggling reward. If players are scanned while in transit they should not give up their contraband and instead flee from the sentinels. Once the player is free and clear they can board the space station and sell their wares.
Taking on sentinels can be a little tricky. however, as long as the player uses some sort of combat technique and constantly moves they should be OK. Players should harvest the canisters that fall from the defeated sentinels to harvest the broken glass. Once the broken glass is analyzed players are given sentinel modules that they can equip on their weapon, EXO-suit, or their spaceship. I recommend that players do not use these upgrades and instead sell them on the space station to the vendor. They should give the player close to the 2000 nanites needed to unlock the reward.
Players are given a sentinel boundary map as a reward and should use this to locate the sentinel pillar to shut down the Sentinels planet wide and unlock another Reward.
Players will need to pulse through space to come across a derelict freighter during the final steps of the expedition. When aboard the freighter the players should shoot all of the organic material to collect “Somo dust”. This ”Somo dust” is needed to help assist polo and collect memory fragments.
Once all of the expedition milestones are complete the player can collect their rewards aboard the space anomaly at the quicksilver vendor.
This was the hardest expedition I’ve ever taken on and required patience and planning. I was able to complete the entire expedition in about 12 hours of time. I had to make a little room in my fleet before being able to add the “Leviathan” to my fleet. Once I did I was given the “Admiral” title for having 30 freighters in my command. Expedition 7: “Leviathan” is active for another 4 weeks as of the time of this writing.
