Avast ye landlubbers! It’s time to raise sales on The infamous black pearl, the Flying Dutchman, and your own unique fleet of ships under your command! Pirates of the Caribbean: Tides of War is like being a part of the story yourself!
In the beginning stages of the game, you play through the storylines of the popular Disney movies that we’ve all come to know and love.
You lord over your own private pirate island which is a safe haven for your Pirate fleet and your men. You’re responsible for upgrading the tavern, the weapon depot, the storage facilities, as well as the gambling hall to keep your Pirates entertained and give you a chance to get back some of their hard earned booty, you don’t actually get their booty, you can play a game of dice for a chance to win resources.
Create your Captain
There are several different skins to choose from when creating your Avatar. The choice is not permenanet and can be changed whenever you like. Your captain is able to equip gear to increase their power. Players can craft these items themselves. Items can be imbued with the soul of blacksmith to increase their stats. There is a chance for failure, but if it the enchanting does fail, the odds of success for the next attempt goes up for an hour.
What kind of game is Tides of War?
Tides of War is a mixup of farming as well as a real time strategy conquest set in the world of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise. In order to keep your crew, ships, and settlement growing and prosperous you have to produce enough food, wood, and coin as well as lime juice to fight off that scurvy!
When you first start out, you are able to command up to five ships to set sail and fight a menagerie of maritime beasts from giant lobsters, evil mermaids, banshees, and large squids. Being a pirate wouldn’t be as fun if it wasn’t for the east India trading company always pursuing and patrolling the waters.
As you defeat enemies and combat you earn experience and items for crafting as well as resources to maintain your town.
To help ensure your victory in battle each ship can be upgraded individually. The hull, masts, cannons, and depending on the ship, there are more options available for upgrading to increase its performance. players have to keep up with their docks and ships. Each ship can have one tactician who is imbued with a elemental Talisman. The tactician can also have an animal companion who also has an elemental talisman. When the companion’s talisman matches the captains ability they’re given a bonus on that ship. As commander you have to distribute the amount of sailors that are on your ship and the types of different sailors and pirates that you hire. You’re also in charge of healing your injured shipmates. If your healers hut doesn’t have the capacity to hold all of your injured men then they will perish from their wounds.
Animal companions can be bought with gems and they are absolutely adorable! there is a parrot, a monkey, a dog, and a kitty that each give a different ability while on the ship, like power against pirates or extra attack power.
The pirate life can get to you and Pirates tend to get a little drunk and lazy sometimes so you have to make sure that they are swabbing the decks and not napping while they are waiting in port . This is a funny little animation where, by holding down on a ship you can zoom in and can see the Pirates on the deck. If you tap them they jump to attention and get back to work and are given some experience points for doing so.
Microtransactions, A Choice Between Time, or Ads
No mobile app game would be complete without microtransactions and there are plenty to be had in Tides of War. One aspect of Microtransactions that I found to be unique to this game is the ability to watch ads for pretty much every aspect of time progression. If you want to save gold and your time speed up boosts you can watch a 30 second ad for a different game, after which you are given a reward. Even after regular mob battles you’re given a chance to double your reward by watching a small ad.
Is Tides of War worth the purchase?
Out of all the games I played this is one of the games that I would actually recommend purchasing the intro starter pack if the game peaks interest. I believe it’s about $2 but gives you enough bonuses and boosts to help you progress through the first 10 levels which would be a grind otherwise. The time to wait between buildings depends on the level you’re trying to raise but around level 10 can take up to a day and a half to complete!
There are plenty of events and quests going on to earn enough free rewards which are automatically sent to your inbox. They do not go to your inventory right away. You have to make sure you check your mail often and collect the prizes that you’ve earned for them to appear in inventory.
You can join an alliance of other pirates because, after all, there is strength in numbers on the deadly seas. When you join an alliance you’re given a new tab in the game that gives you additional missions and goals to reach. Goals Like checking in and donating to the alliance vault, which helps grow the alliance level and grants additional bonuses. Alliances can also team up together to take on higher mobs. A notice is sent in the chat window to all members of your alliance when they are rallying to attack.
Attacks are automatic but sometimes require you to tap on the target to focus your cannons.
Your Settlement can come under attack from Pirates, the east India trading company, or other players. If you are attacked by another player and they destroy your base your men will gather whatever resources they can and go hide in nearby cave to wait for you to return to repair the village. You have to retrieve your men from the cave and let them know the coast is clear. The longer you wait the more materials and men will perish in the cave so make sure you come to the rescue as soon as you can.
Sail on the Black Pearl, The Flying Dutchmen along side Captain Jack Sparrow, WIll Turner, and Elizabeth Swan!
Being that this is a Disney licensed game it has everything that you would expect from a Disney licensed game including beautiful graphics and the actual characters from the movies including Jack sparrow, Elizabeth Swan, William Turner, Captain Barbosa, and Davy Jones! Tides of War is a very casual game that doesn’t require players to constantly feel like they need to Open the app to maintain their settlement. The game has enough mini challenges and events to make the player feel like they are getting their play times worth when playing the game. Of course the desire to purchase Gems is constantly present with the pop-up ads and offers the game tempts players with but it’s not necessary. However, as I always say, if you’re enjoying the game toss a couple of coins their way! Disney doesn’t really need it but it’s good karma! Happy plundering!
