The force is with this app! As cliché as that may sound, it’s true! Whether you’re a fan of “The Original Trilogy”, “The Clone Wars”, “The Mandalorian”, even if you’re a fan of the expanded universe or think that the prequel trilogy is a work of “art”, Galaxy of Heroes has something for every Star Wars fan!
Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes is a collectible RPG style mobile app game for both the Android and Apple OS. Players can unlock their favorite Star Wars characters by completing tasks in game, taking part in special events, unlocking them by chance, or purchasing them via the in-app store by buying crystals for real world money to exchange for character “shards”.
What Characters Can you Access in Galaxy of Heroes?
One of the aspects that drew me to Galaxy of Heroes was the amount of iconic Star Wars characters the game has. Each character has special abilities that can be unlocked and customized depending on the individual player preferences. Each character has a max level of 85 as well as a “star rating” that reaches max level at 7. Star ratings can only increase by collecting “character shards”. These aren’t just generic character models either! The level of detail in the design is nothing short of perfection. Farmboy Luke looks like Luke from ANH. The entire game is beautifully designed, complete with movie quality sound effects and accompanied by the classic John Williams score. One of my favorite sound bites is Vader’s death cry: “Noooooooooo!” So silly.
Using “Mods” players can enhance their characters potency, critical hit rate, offense, defense, and other stats common to RPG’s. Even if you are battling against the same character at the same level, your choices in applying mods can give you the upper hand in a fight.
The player has a limited amount of energy to engage in different activities like “battle energy”, “ship energy”, “mod energy”, etc. The players energy is slowly regenerated over time. “Bonus energy” is given periodically throughout the day. When players engage in a battle they have a chance to win credits, crystals, mods, parts to enhance character stats, and character shards. Once a player has completed a battle and has achieved a “3-star” rating in that encounter, the player can use “sim tickets” in future attempts to simulate the battle and earn the rewards without having to go through the battle again. Sim tickets are earned for completing different tasks.
How Does Combat Work in Galaxy of Heroes?
Combat in Galaxy of Heroes is built on a classic turn based RPG system. The characters are divided by the alignment with the Force, Dark or Light. The player picks 5 characters to go into battle. Depending on what characters the player has to send into fight, their power and strength can improve with their grouping. For instance, if the player has all of the Star Wars Rebels characters their powers will complement one another and they’ll be more powerful against a team of characters who aren’t complimentary. It’s a good strategy when first starting out to try and unlock characters that complement each other and level them up as quickly as possible.
Combat Activates include:
Light/Dark Side Battles- Players choose a group of light or dark side character to go into battle against the opposing side of the force.
The Cantina- The player can mix and match his characters from both sides of the force for maximum damage. The player has a chance to earn character shards, stat enhancers, and credits.
What Events Exist in Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes?
Special Events
Galaxy of Heroes hosts a series of special events daily! These are themed encounters like fighting Ewoks on Endor or taking on Jedi in the Jedi Temple. These events are limited to specific characters so players may not be able to engage in all of the special events until they are able to unlock the appropriate character and reach a specific player level.
Challenges
Challenges change daily and offer the player a chance to win large amounts of credits, stats, and ability enhancers while engaging in themed battles.
Mod Battles
To fine tune a character’s stats a player has to apply Mods. Mods are available to a character once it reaches level 50. Complimentary mods give an additional bonus to stats. These battles can also be “simulated” once a player reaches a 3-star rating.
Galactic Battles
Participating in the Galactic Wars gives the player a chance to take all of his characters against other players in the game via a series of battles. The more players you beat the harder the groupings get. If a player can defeat all of the challengers, they will be rewarded with a large amount of credits, shards, and other goodies.
Not all fight modes are available right away. Some game modes like “mod battles” don’t unlock until the player reaches level 75 for instance.
Space Combat
No Star Wars game would be complete without space combat. Spaceships follow the similar principles that characters do when it comes to level and star ratings. Some ships require that a character be unlocked before the ship can be “activated”. For instance, Ashoka Tano is needed to fly her Jedi Star Fighter or Admiral Thrawn is needed to unlock his Star Destroyer Chimaera. Once available, the player has to earn enough ship shards via completed missions to unlock the ship. Some ships have more than once crew member, like the Emperors shuttle which needs both the Emperor and The Imperial Guard characters to use. The character’s personal stats also improve the stats of the ship they fly.
Although Galaxy of Heroes is a single player game you can team up with other players to form a Guild. Guilds are extremely beneficial. You can communicate with others in your guild via a Guild text chat feature. Guilds have one leader and that leader is responsible for assigning officers who can give orders during guild raids.
Guild Raids
Guild raids are sets of themed events like “The Rancor Pit”. In these events, players have 5 chances to attack. They can mix and match their party from both side of the force for maximum efficiency. The players total damage is applied to the guilds total. If the guild can complete the task all the players who participated in the raid are rewarded according to the level of damage dealt. Some of these events like “The Hoth Attack” take place over 2-3 days and have several stages of attack both on the ground and in space. Players are rewarded with large amounts of credits and shards. It’s worth the time to find an active guild that participates in these raids which reset every few days.
Players can customize their in game profile with portraits unlocked by leveling up. This is also where players can find their player code to share with friends.
Does Galaxy of Heroes Have a Paywall?
There’s not a mobile app game around that doesn’t have some sort of paywall or micro-transactions set up for the player with an abundance of funds but a lack of patience. Paywalls are areas of games or features that a consumer can subscribe to and unlock. I’ve seen several players in my guild purchase $99 worth of crystals several times. I myself have only spent about $20 in the 4 years I’ve been playing the game. This is another reason I love this game! You don’t feel like you’re missing out by not paying extra money. The game missions grow in difficulty with the characters and players level. Of course, I would like the Mandalorian and Grogu character set now, Grogu’s so cute!!! However, the prerequisite for even taking place in that event requires me to unlock 4 other Mandalorian characters and get another to a star level of 7. Being that shards are randomly won or are only available in limited quantities at a time and not all the character’s shards are always available, makes it nearly impossible to accomplish immediately. I recommend exercising patience and enjoying the journey of unlocking these characters instead of blowing lots of money trying to make it happen faster. Players can earn crystals by leveling up, completing missions, and quests so it is possible to earn a few hundred crystals every day just by completing “Daily Challenges”.
Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes is probably one of the best mobile app games I’ve ever played. It’s constantly updating and improving as well as staying current with the evolving Star Wars universe. Just recently there was a “Bad Batch” event where players were given the chance to unlock the latest characters in the new popular Disney+ show! Download it and get in the fun!
