“Apex has the biggest hacking problem of any multiplayer game out there right now on PC. You can’t hack on consoles because they’re closed ecosystems but on PC it’s horrific; really bad.  There have been reports from China where literally entire internet cafes just sit there and everybody’s hacking.”
— Unit Lost: Great British Gaming
The phenomenon of Apex Legends is quite new — the game was released only four months ago on February 4th.  Piggybacking on the success of other Battle Royale-style games like Fortnite, it amassed over 10 million followers in its first three days of runtime.
Created by Respawn Entertainment, the title borrows some of the tropes and design from its Titanfall series. And Titanfall is, developer-wise, in the direct lineage of the multibillion dollar Call of Duty franchise. So, while new, Apex Legends was released by a very savvy, veteran presence in the first person shooter sphere.  I wonder, given their previous games that catered to the FPS crowd, whether they could anticipate the scale of cheating and hacks that would pervade their game from nearly day one.
To date, Respawn claims to have banned and shut down over 770,000 players and wiped out over 300,000 accounts. They have done this with the help of a task force — EA’s fraud unit — which probably will have its own procedural drama broadcast on Twitch in the near future.
So, the obstacles are great, and the adversaries are well-funded.  But that won’t stop us from cheating at a free-to-play shoot em up game — because, darn it, who has the time to master these things?  We just want to grief some noobs.  Is that too much to ask?
I started at the most logical place, iWantCheats.net, a site that is SEO optimized to capture your eyeballs if you’ve got a hankering for downloading an aimbot.  Here’s their mission statement:
“After our team gave the game a try, we wanted to bless the cheating community with the best undetected Apex Legends Hacks online. We set out to make it happen and just 48 hours after the game released the hacks were online and working great!”
For only $27 (or $20 in bitcoin) you can get the finest aimbot money can buy.  Look at these features!

Aimbot features include:

  • Instant Kill Aimbot
  • Movement Prediction
  • Frame Compensation
  • Aim Point
  • Auto Switch
  • Human Aim
  • Visibility Mode
  • Visibility Checks
  • Penetration Checks
  • Smart Target Selection
  • Max Distance
  • Aim Angles
  • Prediction Limit
  • Random Bone
Look at this hype video.  Instant Apex God, here we come!

Is this for real?  Let’s take a look at some of the reviews:

Fake Support, Didn’t issue my refund as promised

“I will be calling my bank if the refund isn’t issued within the next three days. I will get my money back whether you people choose to allow it or not. You gave me a faulty product that was littered with issues, not to mention the fact that you have to disable all of your computer’s security systems to use their product. It’s unsafe and leaves your computer completely open to virus’s, unsigned drivers such as their own (That crashed my computer many many times while trying to get it to work). Overall a 0/10, never got an hour of game time with the product because it simply wouldn’t load the drivers, it would just give me blue screen after blue screen. They claim it was due to my O/S being outdated, I have Windows 10 fully updated, and nothing is wrong with it. They said they’d issue me the refund after a lengthy forum post I created, after I ascertained the fact that the refund will be expected, I log back in to see that I’m permanently banned for virtually just wanting a refund because their product wouldn’t work for me, and caused my computer a whole lot of issues. Take care, you have 3 days, because I know you’ll see this.”

Hm, that’s troubling. What else?

THEY WRITE THEIR OWN REVIEWS AND SCAM PEOPLE

“Read most of the comments here, then decided to buy the cheats.

They dont mention how the cheats works, they mention “it’s no scam” all the time :) why do you bother that much if you give good service and scam :)

They banned my account with 75+ days subscription in it, because their cheat kept getting detected and got me banned on several accounts and because of that I wrote a review here.

Banning people those are not happy for paying detected cheats is low :)

DO NOT TRUST THEM”

Oh.  Ah well.  I guess, “undetectable” was a term of art.  Some more stories from repentant hackers, as relayed from by  Unit Lost: Great British Gaming:

“I have been banned. Unfortunately, I don’t know how they did it. I don’t use the cheat for over three to four days. It was just a waste of money. I blame myself for this.”
“However they handled this shit is beyond me. They can now detect the program or look for the IP for the software insert because I got banned on free accounts, so far, for just having it running in the background, but I just had the cheat running in the background and I got banned. This is not right. These people are unbelievable and so this is while it was temporarily offline I ran my malwarebytes and removed this shit off my computer. It was $27 well spent. Too bad it cost me $40 after going to play my main and getting banned for nothing. “

Well, I guess we’ll have to do better than downloading the first hack that pops up in Google search. Next, I literally did a search for “Obscure Apex Legends Hack.”  And voila, I present to you, LKG Cheats — a very wonky, and possibly Turkish hack site for all sorts of shooters — including Apex Legends. Here’s a speed hack they released on May 15.

But is it legitimately obscure enough to avoid detection from the EA Untouchables? Only time will tell.

In the great war between the hackers and the Five-O, countermeasures develop quickly.  According to the Apex Legends subreddit, “soft-hacking” is being employed en mass by cheaters — a tactic where the aimbots’ accuracy is turned down just enough to fool hit counters and escape scrutiny.  This Cold War between the hackers and the game devs will always continue, and will likely favor the hackers.  It’s generally easier to figure out any one loophole than it is to seal up every potential loophole that might pop up.

So, best of luck, rogue Battle Royale folk. And watch out for the ban stick.
